Interview with Andrew D Buchanan
So, this book is a obviously a fantasy book?
Well, yes and no. I had to classify it and the nearest fiction category is fantasy. But, if the reader can accept that there is a possibility that there maybe a small race of people yet to be discovered and that have this ability to influence minds. Then that's where the fantasy ends. Everything else is real. It set in modern times with normal everyday activities.
What age group do you think would enjoy reading it?
I believe that anyone between 12 and 99 could enjoy it. It's definitely not a specific children's book although I can see why people would think that with 'little people ' being the main theme!
Are there any 18+ parts in the book?
No, it's very clean! There are some romantic moments and some tense situations with near death possibilities.
What gave you the inspiration for the story?
Have you ever walked alone in a forest? I have, usually with my dog. There have been many times I felt that I was being watched. Not by an animal, but by an intelligent being. I could feel some intensity! That's what got my mind thinking of the possibilities of 'little people'!
Tell us a little about the Sparks in this book?
Well the book in the main is about one group of Sparks who became separated from other groups of Sparks centuries ago. There are two sets of parents both with two daughters. Obviously, from what you have read already you know that they are very short, generally between 50 and 80 cm high, but they are very much in proportion to normal sized people. They look very, very much younger than they really are! They are also extremely intelligent and have a great talent for arts and crafts.
What happens in the book?
I really don't want to give too much away but, this book is an introduction to Sparks and a good chunk of it explores how they exsist now and have survived all this time without being discovered. They have most modern devices including televisions and radios and generally, like us normal sized people, their lives have changed dramatically over just a few decades. Before TV and radio they would only have had books to learn about the wider world. However, with the modern media they have had been exposed to recently , the young ones have become restless and not content with the safe protection they have in their forest home. But there's a lot more story than that - no spoilers, sorry.
Why is the story particularly based in Devon?
It could be based anywhere in the world where there is dense woodland, but I live in Devon and it was good to use places I know and are real, well mostly real anyway!
You have a sequel in the pipeline I believe?
Yes, this first book is really an introduction to the Sparks and is written fairly linearly.
You mean the second book is more layered on a timeline?
Yes, the second book tells multiple stories that merge towards the end.
And what happens in the second book?
There are further adventures of the original Sparks from the first book. There is a government agency who are searching for Sparks. There's a club who's members believe to have seen fairies and pixies, along with an investigative reporter who helps them in their search for the truth.
Will the Sparks be discovered by the wider world? You'll have to wait and see. Things get very tense. Oh, there's also some very bad Sparks that potentially threaten the safety of all Sparks.
